Northwest Lockheed L-188A Electra - "Tell City Crash" - 1960
Rare Police film about the infamous & disastrous Tell City, Indiana crash on March 17, 1960, due to flutter caused by originally unexplained reduced stiffness of the engine mounts. This was subsequently defined as "Whirl Mode."; when the oscillations of the engines caused the tremendous strain, then failure, of the wing and attach points. Six months earlier, a Braniff International Airways L-188 Electra, Flight 542, disintegrated over Buffalo, Texas at 15,000 ft (4,600 m), killing all on board. By 1962, all Electras had been modified, and the problem ceased.
